If you are pursuing a commission as an officer in the U.S. Air or Space Force through AFROTC, you must meet the following basic requirements while in the program.

General Requirements

  • Citizenship—You must be a U.S. citizen or be in the process of becoming one, with citizenship attained by the end of your sophomore year.
  • Full-Time Student Status—You must maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester (except for your final semester in the program).
  • Academic Standards—Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher and earn a C or higher in Aerospace Studies classes.
    • If you are on an AFROTC scholarship, you must maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Medical Qualification

  • You must medically qualify for service through the Department of Defense Medical Evaluation Review Board (DODMERB).
    • This process can take months, so early action is encouraged. Learn more: DODMERB Website.
    • You must be medically qualified (or have an approved waiver) by the end of your first semester as an AS200 cadet (typically at the end of your sophomore fall semester).

Testing Requirements

  • Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT) – Must be taken during your first term as an active/applicant cadet.

Military and Fitness Standards

  • Physical Fitness: All scholarship or contracted cadets must pass the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and meet Body Composition standards every semester.
  • Non-Scholarship/Non-Contracted Cadets: Must pass fitness and composition requirements by the end of their first semester as an AS200 cadet. More details are available in the Physical Training (PT) section.
  • Mandatory Training Participation:
    • Attend two PT sessions per week.
    • Attend weekly Leadership Laboratory (LLAB).
    • Complete all Aerospace Studies coursework.
  • Drug and Alcohol Abuse Zero-Tolerance Policy: Cadets must strictly adhere to AFROTC’s zero-tolerance policy for drug use and alcohol abuse.
  • Military Grooming & Appearance Standards: Cadets must comply with Air Force regulations regarding hair, tattoos, piercings, and grooming.
