The AFROTC program is divided into two phases: the General Military Course (GMC) & the Professional Officer Course (POC).
General Military Course (GMC)
The GMC phase is designed for first- and second-year undergraduate students, providing an opportunity to explore AFROTC without commitment by enrolling in 100- and 200-level Aerospace Studies courses—one-hour classroom lectures held weekly.
However, if your goal is to be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air or Space Force, you will be expected to participate fully in additional Practical Military Training (PMT), which includes mandatory:
- Weekly Leadership Labs (LLABs)—hands-on training in military leadership and operations
- Physical Training (PT)—held twice a week to ensure cadets meet Air Force fitness standards
During the GMC phase, cadets gain an understanding of the structure, history, and mission of the Air and Space Forces. By the sophomore year, eligible cadets will have the opportunity to compete for an Enrollment Allocation (EA), a requirement for attending Field Training in the summer after sophomore year. Completing Field Training is necessary to progress into the POC.
Professional Officer Course (POC)
The POC phase is for third- and fourth-year undergraduate students who have completed Field Training. As a POC cadet, you will receive advanced instruction in:
- Leadership and Management—preparing you for officer responsibilities
- National Security Policy—introduction to strategic defense in a global context
This phase includes a three-credit-hour class, along with continued participation in mandatory leadership lab and physical training each week.
