Detachment 012 has multiple crosstown agreements with schools throughout Birmingham and Huntsville. Any student attending a crosstown university can register for the Air Force ROTC program.
All Air Force ROTC classes, labs, and physical training will be held at Samford University. Transportation to and from is the responsibility of the student. Cadre are not allowed to transport students, and the university provides no transportation. If you are a Montevallo student, please understand that the commute can take up to an hour depending on traffic. Once registered for class, you will receive a welcome letter and orientation information.
Joining AFROTC
You can join AFROTC any time during your freshman year or at the start of your sophomore year.
If you are a law student or seeking to join after your sophomore year, options are limited—please consult with a Cadre member to discuss potential pathways.
If you are already in your junior or senior year and ROTC is no longer a viable option, you may consider Officer Training School (OTS). Visit Find an Air Force Recruiter or—if you are from the Birmingham area—email 342rcs.aflt.org@us.af.mil for more information.
What It Takes
AFROTC is a demanding program that requires discipline, dedication, and resilience from all cadets pursuing a commission. While you will be part of a supportive and motivated Cadet Wing, success in this program comes down to personal responsibility and commitment.
