November marks Native American Heritage Month, established as a month-long observance in 1990, Native American Heritage Month serves as an opportunity to promote greater awareness of Native peoples' experiences, honoring their resilience, achievements and cultural heritage.
Samford University’s Office of Student Success and Diversity will commemorate this month with events that engage the campus community in meaningful discussions about Native American history, culture and contemporary issues. The events will reflect Samford’s commitment to fostering a greater understanding of Native American heritage and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion on campus. Through educational initiatives like these, Samford aims to create an environment where all cultural backgrounds are honored and celebrated in the spirit of the university’s Christ-centered mission.

The Office of Student Success and Diversity will present a screening of Gather, an acclaimed documentary examining the growing movement among Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through food sovereignty. The film follows Indigenous people across the United States who are working to restore traditional food practices as a means of healing from historical trauma. The screening will be followed by a discussion, giving attendees a space to explore how Native communities are reconnecting with their cultural roots and advocating for sovereignty through food and land stewardship.
