Although Asian American Pacific Islander Month is typically recognized during the month of May, Samford University will hold a special emphasis week, April 11-15, so the entire community can join in the celebration before summer break. During this time, the Office of Diversity and Intercultural Initiatives will host several events and will feature information on their Instagram page, @samforddiverse, about why we celebrate the AAPI community during this time and how you can further connect with your local community.
Jenée Spencer, director of diversity education and development, encourages all students and faculty to participate in some of the exciting ways you can participate in Samford’s early celebration of AAPI Month and foster community outreach and growth.
“Asian American Pacific Islander Month is all about honoring the AAPI community and celebrating the beautiful culture they bring to our campus and society,” she said. “ODII is proud to offer several opportunities for our students to do just that during our special emphasis week.”
Film Screening: Crazy Rich Asians
April 12, 7 p.m. | Christenberry Planetarium (PH 140)
On April 12, in partnership with the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, join the Samford community for a screening of the popular film, Crazy Rich Asians. During this time there will be discussion on Chinese culture and, of course, snacks!
Lunch and Learn: Not Your Model Minority

On April 13, join ODII for a lunch and learn centering around the idea of the Model Minority and the effects on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders while learning more about how to support and advocate for unity and opportunity for all members of the Samford community. Lunch will be provided with registration.

In the wake of COVID-19, the language that has recently centered Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders has furthered negative stereotypes members of those communities. Together attendees will unpack the effects of hate speech on the AAPI community in recent years.
Expanding Darshan: To See and Be Seen by Manjari Sharma
April 15, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Birmingham Museum of Art
Art is a great way to connect with community! The Birmingham Museum of Art celebrates such community with the Manjra Sharma Exhibit. The Office of Diversity and Intercultural Initiatives encourages you to take some time to discover the way that the artist uses her creativity to “[address] issues of identity, multiculturalism, and personal mythology.” Admission is free.
