Samford is set to face Howard University in an exhibition debate at the historic Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024. The event, known as the Southern Scholars Debate Classic, is part of the Southern Scholars Showcase, a college fair aimed at students interested in pursuing higher education.
Samford’s debate team will be led by senior law, politics and society and Spanish double major TJ Riggs and senior acting and directing major Maddox Gates, who will represent the university in a discussion about the effectiveness of the United States’ predominantly two-party political system. The topics of free enterprise, foreign policy, education, health care and affirmative action will be at the forefront of the event.
"I’m excited to put our skills to the test against Howard University in a setting the public can appreciate," said Riggs, who recently became the fifth Samford student in history to be named a Truman Scholar. "This debate is a great chance for our team to inspire Birmingham youth to use their academic skills for good, and I’m honored to be part of it."
The event, hosted by the Penny Foundation—founded by 2001 Samford graduate Lyord Watson Jr.—is expected to attract an audience of approximately 800 people, including key religious and civic leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness thought-provoking discussions that foster civic engagement and highlight the critical thinking and debating skills of participating students.
