National Cancer Institute Director to Speak at Samford

Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2003-10-17

Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., director, National Cancer Institute (NCI), will speak at Samford University Thursday (OCT. 23) at 7 p.m. in Reid Chapel on the topic “The Future of Cancer: Progress with a Purpose.” The public is invited free of charge. Von Eschenbach is presented as this year’s speaker in the J. Roderick Davis Lecture series.

Dr. von Eschenbach is a nationally recognized urologic surgeon whose career as a leader in the fight against cancer spans three decades. Prior to being named to lead the NCI in January, 2002, he directed both the Genitourinary Cancer Center and the Prostate Cancer Research Program at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. His leadership is credited with fostering model integrated research programs in the biology, epidemiology, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.

A two-time cancer survivor himself, von Eschenbach is a founding member of the National Dialogue on Cancer and was president-elect of the American Cancer Society at the time of his appointment to the NCI.

The NCI is a federal agency of more than 4,000 employees and a fiscal year 2003 budget of nearly $4.7 billion.

The Davis Lecture series honors former Samford arts and sciences dean Dr. Rod Davis, who retired in 2001.
