Alabama Governor's School Begins June 15 At Samford

Students from 52 high schools in 29 counties will arrive at Samford University Sunday (JUNE 15) for Alabama Governor's School. A total of 78 rising high school seniors are expected for the two-week honors program for academically gifted students.

Opening ceremonies will be Sunday (JUNE 15) at 2:45 p.m. in Harrison Theatre.

During AGS, participants select major and minor areas of coursework. Topics include the legal process, healthcare, research science, arts, television news, magazine publication,, photography, Alabama heroes, Birmingham's urban geography, Alabama plants and animals, web design, Euripides' Medea, biomedical engineering and Southern culture.

New subjects this year include an astronomy course taught in the Samford Sciencenter Planetarium, a fitness course during which students will explore the scientific frontiers of fitness assessment, and a business course in which students will run their own simulated companies using internet-based software.

Participants will make off-campus trips to see a Birmingham Steeldogs football game, and to visit area art, jazz, sports and civil rights museums.

A special dinner on Tuesday, June 24, will feature a talk by Samford president Thomas E . Corts, who will discuss state constitutional reform.

Closing ceremonies will be Friday, June 27, at 10 a.m. in Harrison Theatre.
