Samford To Graduate 825 May 24; Malone, Davenport, Papantonio To Speak during Weekend
Samford University will graduate about 825 students during Commencement Saturday, May 24.
Wallace D. Malone, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SouthTrust Corporation, will deliver the Commencement address during 10 a.m. exercises at Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Arena.
Malone has headed the $50.6 billion regional bank holding company since 1981. The company has more than 700 offices in Alabama and nine other states from Virginia to Texas. Malone is an active civic leader and trustee of Samford.
Commencement for Samford's Cumberland School of Law will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in Wright Center Concert Hall on the campus. Attorney Mike Papantonio of Pensacola, Fla., a 1981 Cumberland graduate, will speak.
Commencement Weekend will begin Friday, May 23, with a reception for seniors from 2:30-4:30 in the Main Dining Room of Beeson University Center.
Baccalaureate service will be at 6 p.m. Friday in Wright Center Concert Hall. Dr. David Davenport, research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon. He was president of Pepperdine University from 1985 until 2000.
Dr. Davenport researches and writes about public policy, including American culture and values, education and legal policy. He is a columnist for the Scripps-Howard News Service and co-authored a recent book on "Shepherd Leadership" to be released in the fall by Jossey Bass Publishers.
