A Samford University debate team tied for first place in recent southeast regional competition, earning the right to advance to the national tournament.
Samford debaters James Radford of Madison and James Phillips of Vestavia Hills compiled a 5-1 record to tie with West Georgia College for first place in the Southeast Regional Championship. The event was held Feb. 28-March 2 at Georgia State University.
Radford, a senior English major, was recognized as the top debater out of 100 individual competitors at the tournament.
The national debate tournament, which invites only the top 72 teams in the nation to compete, will be in Atlanta in early April.
