Samford's Beeson Divinity School to Celebrate 25th Year

Posted on 2013-04-16 by Mary Wimberley (205) 726-2922

Samford University's Beeson Divinity School will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special service on Tuesday, April 23.

Rev. Richard Bewes, former pastor of All Souls Church in London, England, will speak at an 11 a.m. worship service in Andrew Gerow Hodges Chapel. The public is invited.

A longtime friend of Beeson founding dean Dr. Timothy George, Bewes was appointed by the Crown as rector of the Anglican Evangelical All Souls Church in 1983.  He retired from its leadership in 2004. During his tenure, the church developed to embrace some 70 nationalities in its membership and welcome 2,500 worshippers each Sunday.

A broadcaster, hymn-writer and Christian communicator, Bewes is the author of more than 20 books on religious themes, including the most recent 150 Pocket Thoughts. He serves on the British board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Prior to the anniversary service, Beeson students, faculty, staff and others will gather on Centennial Walk at 10:45 a.m. for a processional from the statue of the divinity school's founding benefactor, Ralph Waldo Beeson, to Hodges Chapel. Dr. Kenneth Mathews, a 25-year member of the Beeson faculty, will lead a brief devotional prior to entering the chapel.

Since opening its doors to an entering class of 32 fulltime students in the fall of 1988, Beeson has awarded 982 degrees through its master's and doctoral programs.
