Rich Fall Schedule Highlights Samford as Regional Arts Center

Samford University’s School of the Arts begins its 2013-2014 season this month, with a fall calendar of music, visual art and theater that emphasizes its growing reputation as a regional arts center.

The Davis Architects Guest Artists Series, in collaboration with Birmingham Chamber Music Society, will present a concert by cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han Sept. 24. The series will continue Nov. 1 as pianist Sophia Gilmson takes the stage in conjunction with the Fletcher and Nell Morris Piano Competition at Samford.samfordarts

Samford Art Gallery presents its annual Faculty Exhibition through Sept. 30, followed by an International Letterpress Printed Ephemera exhibit Oct. 18-Nov. 26. A Christmas Chalk Talk with professor Lowell Vann and the Bells of Buchanan (Dec. 5) and Graduating Senior Art Exhibit (Dec. 9-14) complete the fall gallery schedule.

The Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman Theatre and Dance Series will present two plays this fall–the comedy Moon Over Buffalo (Oct. 3-6) and the classic drama 12 Angry Jurors (Nov. 7-10).

Samford Opera will present Pirates of Penzance, a rollicking collaboration between Samford's Division of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance (Nov. 21-24).

Fall music and worship highlights include the Choral Vespers Series (Sept. 6, Oct. 4, Nov. 1,) Samford’s annual Hymn Sing (Sept. 29,) guest organist Christopher Houlihan (Oct. 26-27,) Worship Exchange featuring Greg Scheer (Oct. 8) and the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah (Dec. 6).

Samford’s Wright Center Signature Series will present Diavolo Dance Theater (Oct. 1,) Movement Workshop Group (Oct. 28,) Broadway’s Ring of Fire (Nov. 5), Savion Glover’s STePz (Nov. 12,) Bela Fleck with Brooklyn Rider (Nov. 18) and Civil War Voices (Nov. 22).

Other School of the Arts musical highlights of the fall include the annual Faculty Gala, sponsored by Patty McDonald  (Sept. 10,) Appalachian Strings (Nov. 12,) and a host of other free performances by Samford faculty and students.

In addition to its own arts offerings, Samford will host fall events by community partners Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Boys Choir, Birmingham Chamber Music Society, Opera Birmingham and SuperJazz,.
