A music minor is an excellent addition to academic study for the student who is has a musical background, is passionate about performance but has chosen to major in another field. Music minors are valued members of ensembles, studios and classes.

Music Minor Study

A student must have successfully completed an audition in order to declare a minor in music. As a minor students must register for two credits for each semester of study in the principal performance area and must take a jury examination at the end of each semester. The ensemble credits must be in major ensembles.

Apply and Audition 

  • Submit the Music Minor Application in which you’ll request your audition day
  • The Music Minor Application should be submitted no later than three weeks prior to your requested audition day
  • Attend an audition day
  • Receive a Music Minor admission decision within a month of your audition day

Students desiring to minor in music must audition in their principal performing area and take a placement examination in music theory. Music minor auditions take place on regularly scheduled audition days and the week of Fall move-in. Music theory placement examination is administered online through the Director of Student Services and Advising for the School of the Arts after successful completion of an audition.
