Samford University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication will hold a high school journalism workshop Sept. 13.
This annual event features current Samford journalism faculty, as well as real-world journalists who will teach certain skill sets in their respective fields of broadcast, print and photojournalism.
"It's a great way to learn the ropes in a four hour workshop and find out about what it's like to work in journalism today," Samford assistant professor of journalism and mass communication Dr. Sheree Martin said.
The workshop begins at 9 a.m., and Andrew Yeager will give the keynote address. Yeager is a reporter and on-air host with WBHM 90.3.
Throughout the morning students will have the opportunity to hear from Dr. Julie Williams speak about news reporting and writing as well as from Katilyn McCulley, a reporter from CBS 42, who will teach television reporting and writing. Dr. Dennis Jones will hold a session covering principles of newspaper design. Williams and Jones are Samford faculty members, and McCulley is a Samford alumna.
Two afternoon sessions will be offered for students to hear about a variety of topics including photojournalism, sports reporting and online news reporting.
For students who are involved with a student newspaper, Kenny Smith will teach a session on managing and staffing a school newspaper. Other sessions include intermediate/ advanced television news reporting and writing by Dr. Lee Farquhar, Dr. Jon Clemmensen on publishing a literary magazine. Farquhar and Clemmensen are Samford faculty members, and Smith is Samford's student media advisor.
Lauren Womack, a 2011 Samford graduate, will also hold a session on preparing for a journalism career. Womack was a recent editorial assistant for Architectural Digest.
Students will also have a chance to present their own media products and receive critiques from Clemmensen, Jones and Farquhar.
Cost of the workshop is $4 per student.
